Fortuneswell is the gateway to the island of Portland in Dorset, an old fishing community that has been linked to Weymouth via Wyke Regis relatively recently.

 

Portland Harbour is going to be the venue for the 2012 Olympics sailing events and it is evident that the Olympic buzz is already starting in the local community.

 

In the town itself and surrounding areas there are many Bed & Breakfasts, apartmernts and holiday cottages, many with wonderful views over Portland Harbour, back along the west cliff of Portland itself down towards Portland Bill Light House and west along the amazing World Heritage Jurassic Coast towards Lyme Regis.

 

The Isle of Portland itself is connected to the mainland by a narrow neck of land, the limestone peninsula of the Isle of Portland culminates at Portland Bill. Here stands the 136 feet high lighthouse which was built in 1903-06 to replace two earlier structures and nearby is the huge, detached block of stone known as Pulpit Rock.
